Eric Carle
Perhaps one of the most adored children’s book writers and illustrators, Eric Carle was born in June of 1929 in Syracuse, New York. Yet while he may have been born in the United States he actually grew up in Germany and it wasn’t until 1952 that he later returned back to New York with nothing more than $40 and a head full of dreams.
He found a position as a graphic designer but was then drafted to fight in the Korean War where he fought and was lucky enough to laterreturn back to that same job.
Eric Carle’s style is just as famous as his name with a finger painting technique that creates vibrant and vivid depictions for his stories. Because of his inherent affection for nature, many of his books are centred around the animal kingdom and the outdoors.
He further tailors his tales with a child’s whimsy in mind, but adults love his books just as much as the wee folds. In fact, his most renowned book is ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ and since its publication in 1969 it has been transcribed into more than 47 different languages so that people across the world can delight in the tale of this ravenous caterpillar.
With more than seventy published storybooks to his name including My Very First Book Of Numbers and My Very First Book Of Words, today Eric Carle is still active in the literary community and helping to spread the written word to children across the world.
He has the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art that he founded and was recognized by Google in them having him create their Google doogle logo. He further finds a way to spend time with his loving wife, Barbara and two children.
